Why Organize With Local 701?
Most employers try to talk workers out of organizing because companies know that with a union, workers gain the power to make themselves heard. Employers must listen — that’s what having a union is about. A strong voice in the workplace means better conditions, pay, benefits, and respect on the job.
You Have the Right to Organize
The National Labor Relations Act, Section 7, guarantees your right to:
- Help form or join a union
- Bargain over wages, benefits, and working conditions
- Have small group meetings at lunch or break time in non-work areas
- Talk about the Union on your own time
- Distribute literature in non-work areas on non-work time
- Attend Union meetings without interference from your boss
- Wear Union buttons
- Solicit other employees for Union membership on lunch or break (including company property such as break rooms and parking lots)
It Is Illegal for Employers to:
- Threaten or punish workers with termination, layoff, reduced hours, or discipline for union activity
- Threaten to move the facility or withhold a scheduled wage increase because of union activity
- Spy on employees who attend Union activities
- Bribe or promise special favors to employees to vote against the Union
- Threaten to close the facility if the Union is voted in
- Ask you about your Union activities
- Deny you the right to vote for Union representation
- Fire, transfer, demote, discipline, or lay you off in retaliation for Union activities
All of the above acts violate federal labor laws. If any occur, the Union will file charges with the National Labor Relations Board.
